BEHIND THE SCENES OF AUSTRALIAN FASHION WEEK
Australian Fashion Week is often defined by what happens on the runway, yet much of the story unfolds in the months beforehand. Collection development, fittings, garment preparation and countless conversations all shape the presentation that eventually reaches the catwalk.
In 2026, madre natura was selected to present as part of the Frontier Group Show at Australian Fashion Week, supported by Create NSW alongside five emerging Australian designers. The opportunity provided a platform to showcase the collection while engaging with industry mentors, media and the broader Australian fashion community. For madre natura, the journey began long before arriving backstage. Months of preparation were spent refining the collection, sourcing materials and bringing together the many moving parts required to present on a national stage.
Behind every presentation is a process shaped by patience, craftsmanship and attention to detail. Garments moved between fittings and final adjustments, fabrics were carefully selected and each look was considered as part of a larger story. As an independent label, every decision carries significance. Each piece is designed with longevity in mind, intended to remain relevant and cherished long after a season has passed. The lead-up to Fashion Week brought together months of design development, planning and preparation as the collection evolved from concept to presentation.
Working alongside the Australian Fashion Week team provided an opportunity to reflect not only on the collection itself, but on the values that underpin madre natura. Throughout the programme, conversations with industry mentors and representatives from Vogue Australia encouraged a deeper consideration of why we create. Beyond design and craftsmanship, the experience challenged us to articulate the purpose behind the work and the role longevity plays within contemporary fashion. In many ways, the preparation became an opportunity to refine the language around ideas that have guided the brand since its beginning.
As presentation day approached, the atmosphere shifted. Final fittings were completed, garments were steamed and the collection prepared for its debut. Backstage, months of work came together in a matter of hours. Models moved between hair and makeup, final adjustments were made and the energy of the day began to build.
Presenting alongside five fellow designers as part of the Frontier Group Show created a strong sense of collaboration and shared purpose. While each collection reflected a unique perspective, the experience highlighted the strength and diversity of Australia's emerging design community. It is often these quieter moments that remain most memorable the details, conversations and collective effort that exist beyond the runway itself.
These behind-the-scenes moments offer a glimpse into the process, people and craftsmanship that shaped madre natura's Australian Fashion Week presentation. The runway may be the final destination, but the story begins long before the lights come up. In our next journal, we share the collection on the runway and reflect on the experience of presenting madre natura at Australian Fashion Week.
